South Dakota Stock Grower Association members are pleased Congresswoman Kristi Noem has introduced the Livestock Disaster Protection Act.

The measure provides relief for producers who have suffered from drought and natural disasters. It includes the Livestock Indemnity, Livestock Forage and Emergency Livestock Assistance programs.

Stock Grower’s President Shane Kolb says his group asked Noem to carry the measure.

Kolb says it’s good Noem’s bill contains retroactive coverage for fiscal years 2012 and 2013. He says the effects from last year’s drought have not yet subsided.

He says not only have forages been tight, hay prices haven’t gone down and without help, many producers will likely go out of business.
