Rep. Kristi Noem spent Mother’s Day weekend far away from South Dakota as she joined five other female lawmakers in a trip to Afghanistan.
The delegation visited the Asian country to see how the withdrawal of American troops is proceeding, show support for Afghan women and assess how the country is progressing toward becoming self-independent. The lawmakers made stops in the capital city of Kabul and in the western city of Herat.
“A lot of (the troops) are mothers away from their kids, and I know they make a lot of sacrifices,” said Noem, who left Thursday night and arrived back in the United States early Tuesday.
This was the seventh year that a delegation of female representatives visited Afghanistan during Mother’s Day weekend.
