South Dakota Congresswoman Kristi Noem says farm bill markup will begin next week and she’s concerned about efforts to include an animal welfare provision.

Speaking at the Jackrabbit Family Farms open house near Mt. Vernon on Friday she says animal activists are pushing for mandated care standards and if successful it would be devastating to livestock producers.

Noem says the ag committees will start writing the farm bill next week and this time the legislation will come up for a House vote.

She’s also concerned about the push for large SNAP cuts which could hurt the chances of passing the farm bill.  Noem is hopeful they’ll look at common sense reform instead.
