Representative Kristi Noem today met with Indian Health Service (IHS) Principal Deputy Director Robert McSwain, who currently heads the agency charged with providing care to tribal members, to address the health emergency on South Dakota Indian Reservations.

“Ending this crisis will require continued collaboration among tribal communities, federal agencies, and Congress,” said Noem, following the meeting in her D.C. office.  “While today’s meeting didn’t provide every answer, I’m hopeful it was a discussion we can continue to build off until this crisis is resolved.”

In December 2015, Noem issued a letter to McSwain, discussing documented instances where patients were put in serious danger when receiving care at IHS service units in South Dakota.  She also solicited information about what steps are being taken to correct the problems.  Read the letter here.
