Washington, D.C. – Rep. Kristi Noem released the following statement today calling for President Obama to fire Acting Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Steven Miller. This follows the release of last night’s report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) on the targeting of conservative groups by the IRS.
"The power to tax is one of the strongest powers the government has, and it should never be taken lightly or become a political tool," said Rep. Noem. "The President should take responsibility for his administration and fire the IRS Commissioner. I have cosponsored legislation that will make it a crime to conduct the kind of politically-motivated discrimination we have recently seen from the IRS."
Rep. Noem recently cosponsored legislation which would make it a crime for an IRS employee to discriminate against an individual or group on the basis of their protected rights. The Taxpayer Nondiscrimination & Protection Act of 2013 would increase the maximum penalty to a $5,000 fine, five years in prison or both.
