WASHINGTON— U.S. Representative Kristi Noem (R-SD) today announced that the chairman of the House committee with oversight of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has accepted her invitation to visit South Dakota this month.
Noem will host Rep. John L. Mica (R-FL), Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, in Pierre, SD on August 19. Rep. Noem and Chairman Mica will participate in a roundtable discussion with the public and other local stakeholders, which is expected to include state and local officials as well as officials with the Corps of Engineers. Rep. Noem and Chairman Mica will also tour part of the impacted area along the Missouri River.
“Chairman Mica leads the Congressional committee with oversight over the Corps of Engineers and Corps programs. I’m pleased he will have a chance to see some of the flooding damage firsthand and hear directly from those who have been impacted by the Corps water management decisions,” said Noem.
“After numerous conversations with Rep. Noem regarding the flooding in South Dakota, I was glad to accept her invitation. I look forward to the opportunity to review both the effects of this disaster as well as federal policy and agency actions. The Corps of Engineers has to balance the many purposes of water control in the region, including flood protection, water supply, recreation, endangered species, hydropower, and navigation. I believe it is important that we learn as much as we can about the recent flooding and how the flood was managed by the Corps of Engineers,” said Mica.
Last month, Rep. Noem led the formation of a bipartisan Missouri River flood working group. Along with 15 of her House colleagues, Rep. Noem will use the new group to hold meetings and press the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for more information and answers about the historic flooding along the Missouri River this year.
